About Us

Established in 1989, Mariet du Plooy Audiologists Inc. is a reputable group of independent audiology practices in Pretoria. Mariet Du Plooy and her experienced team of audiologists provide professional and personalized diagnostic hearing care services.

At Mariet du Plooy Audiologists Inc., we believe in a patient orientated approach where we take the time to get to know our patients, so that we may provide them with tailor-made solutions to their individual hearing problems.

What we offer:

Diagnostic Audiology

This is an in-depth hearing evaluation and essentially looks at the 3 main parts of the ear (both structurally and functionally). The outcome of this evaluation will indicate whether there is any hearing impairment, and it can tell us where in the ear the problem originates.  Our team of audiologists will advise the appropriate management for you.

Pediatric Audiology

This is an in-depth hearing evaluation for infants and young children. This test is similar to the standard test battery for adults, except that there are a few adaptations for infants and children.  We aim to keep the child relaxed throughout the process by interacting with them through play.  Methods for pediatric testing include Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA) and Conditioned Play Audiometry (CPA). These methods typically include building of blocks or similar methods.
Identifying a hearing problem early in a child's life is essential.  Early hearing intervention can help to prevent delays in speech and language, as well as social development.

Electrophysiological Testing

Our audiologists are qualified to perform several types of electrophysiological testing, one of the most common tests performed is Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR).  ABR testing is used to determine the hearing abilities of infants, young children, and other hard to test populations.

Neonatal Hearing Screening

Newborn hearing screening is non-invasive and takes around 5 to 10 minutes to complete.  The screening may be done while your baby is sleeping or lying still.  There are two methods which are used to screen newborns namely, Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) screening and Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) screening. The AABR method is more commonly used to assess infants who have additional risk factors such as those who have spent some time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Medical Legal Audiology

We have built a strong reputation working with many medico-legal cases and by providing highly professional and accurate audiological reports.  We also work with expert Ear, Nose and Throat specialists and other specialists in the medico-legal field.

Some of the medico-legal audiological services that we offer are:

  • Subjective and objective test methods.
  • Diagnostic hearing evaluations for children and adults.
  • Electrophysiological assessments.
  • Balance and vestibular assessments.

Industrial Audiology

These hearing assessments are for workers/employees who are regularly exposed to harmful levels of noise in their work environment. Industrial hearing assessments can determine whether this exposure is having a detrimental effect on an employee over time.  Our team can advise on preventative measures.

Balance Function Tests (VNG)

Vestibular testing (VNG) includes several tests which assess how the balance system within your inner ear (vestibular system) is working.  These tests are usually performed if the patient presents with symptoms of dizzinessvertigo or feeling off balance.  The VNG can provide more insight into the cause of your dizziness or balance problem.

Balance rehabilitation

Our team provides rehabilitation for various balance disorders.

Voice Therapy

Voice therapy is a program designed to reduce hoarseness through guided change in vocal behaviors and lifestyle changes.
Voice therapy consists of a variety of tasks designed to eliminate harmful vocal behavior, shape healthy vocal behavior, and assist in vocal cord wound healing after surgery or injury.

Tinnitus evaluation & management
Tinnitus can be described as a ringing, whirring, chirping or buzzing in your ears.  Our team will make use of tinnitus matching and various questionnaires to determine the nature and severity of your tinnitus, after which a variety of treatment and management options can be implemented to provide you with some relief.

Vertigo

Vertigo is a symptom, rather than a condition itself. It's the sensation that you, or the environment around you, is moving or spinning.
This feeling may be barely noticeable, or it may be so severe that you find it difficult to keep your balance and do everyday tasks.

Here are some common vertigo causes:

  • Migraine headaches.
  • Certain medications.
  • Stroke.
  • Arrhythmia.
  • Diabetes.
  • Head injuries.
  • Prolonged bed rest.
  • Shingles in or near the ear.

Hearing aids

We offer demo periods with the latest hearing aids and assistive technology.

Hearing aid fittings and verification

If hearing aids are recommended after your hearing is tested, your audiologist will work with you to find the right hearing aids for you because successful hearing aid fittings are as individual as you are.   During the hearing aid fitting, real ear measurements are performed  to verify that the amplification levels are correct and to ensure that you are comfortable with the amplified sound. Once you are happy with the sound of your hearing aids, you will also be counseled on how to change the battery, use any features, as well as clean and maintain your hearing aids.

Hearing protection / Noise protection

Hearing protection is used to reduce (attenuate) noise reaching the wearer's ear, and so reduce the risk of hearing damage from excessive noise.
We provide counselling on how to protect hearing from the effects of noise and we provide solutions to aid in hearing loss prevention.

Swimming plugs

If you’re swimming in a pool, open water or the sea, you will be susceptible to an infection known as otitis externa, which is more commonly known as swimmer’s ear. The most effective way to keep water out of the ear canal is to make use of custom-made swim plugs. These usually come in a variety of fun colours for kids.

Sleeping plugs

Sleep is a vital part of maintaining a healthy, stress-free life. Sleeping with earplugs can have a number of benefits, such as an increase in natural melatonin, improved sleep quality and duration, and not needing to rely on medication.  We offer custom-made sleep plugs which usually offer the best comfort.
